Is Bruno Mars a Cultural Appropriator?

On Friday, a video published by web series The Grapevine grappled with the question of whether Bruno Mars (who is of Filipino, Puerto Rican and Jewish descent) appropriates African-American culture. “Bruno Mars 100 percent is a cultural appropriator,” said writer and activist Seren Sensei. “He is not black, at all, and he plays up his racial ambiguity to cross genres.” This clip went viral on Twitter, causing polarizing and, at times, heated debate. “Take that same energy you have to be mad at Bruno Mars and bring it over to Tekashi, Post Malone, Lil Pump, etc,” write one user, while a New Yorker critic wrote, “I just don’t know if the zero-sum condemnation that cultural appropriation implies is a useful framework anymore.”
